Life's a Beach

Sam and Anna at Jones Beach

What else does one do when they are on Long Island? We go to the beach! Sarah, Anna, and my self spent many a day at Jones Beach while we were in New York and were so happy when Sam finally joined us. This year the girls finally grew the courage to surf the waves. They were in and out, over and under, swimming away. No fear at all. The days of sand castles are long behind. The only one who had any fear was me watching the girls swim. I know that treacherous undertow of the Atlantic, having been knocked over and dragged out by the waves a few times in my day.

I have to admit. It is truly wonderful to share a part of your childhood with your children. And for me, Jones Beach and the other local beaches on Long Island were where I spent my childhood summers. I even took the kids to the shack where we used to get soft serve ice cream on the way home, Marvel, it is a Long Island institution. Imagine, it is still there and even more popular. Though these days they no longer sell hot dogs and fries....only soft serve ice cream and frozen yogurt, fat free and sugar free. My how times change. Yet, still, they don't.

Portofino in Levittown!

La Mia Famiglia

Here we all are...the Liljehults, seated at my Dad's favorite Italian joint, Portofino. Now how is that for a coincidence? We go all the way from Portofino, Italy to eat at Portofino in Levittown. Which, by the way, according to my two little pizza experts, Sarah and Anna, has the best pizza they ever had, ANYWHERE! No one, anywhere, can top New York for pizza. Punta. Basta!

Sitting to my right is my sister in law Mary Liljehult, Anna, my brother Jack Liljehult, Sarah behind, Jack's daughter Julia Liljehult, sister in law, Cristianne Liljehult (hiding behind my dad, sorry), my brother and her husband Billy Liljehult, and last but not least, dear old Dad, Jack Liljehult.

Aren't we one big happy family, with one complicated last name?

I Am Back

Yes it is true. I am back in Italy after my long sojourn in the US of A. After 8 wonderful weeks in New York, man it feels great to be home! And I am sure my long suffering Dad was sad to see us go, but happy to have back his bed to sleep in.

We got back to Italy Saturday evening after a long journey across the Atlantic with a transfer in Heathrow to Milan. Which of course was delayed several hours....Ah....Alitalia, ever punctual always reliable. And just so you all know, is going on strike August 30 and 31st! Just in time for the "ri entro". In english, all the Italians coming back from their summer holidays. Think caos to the max and watch for it on CNN! And of course, avoid traveling to Italy those days!

As of today, I am all caught up on my cappuccinos, fresh mozzarella, and all things edible I missed. I do not think I want to see or eat another french fry or hot dog for a long time!

Ciao for now!
